Student Society President-Elect Ousted Following Charlie Kirk Posts
The future president of the prestigious debating society has been ousted from office after failing a vote of confidence that came after his disputed social media posts about the conservative activist.
The motion against the student leader achieved the required two-thirds threshold to remove him from office, according to an statement from the organization.
Contentious Posts
The dispute erupted after Mr Abaraonye reportedly posted messages on online platforms that appeared to celebrate the killing of the American conservative figure, who was fatally shot while speaking at a college in the United States.
According to sources, one Instagram post reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.
The student leader is also said to have written in a WhatsApp chat with fellow students appearing to express approval of the event.
Vote Outcome
The no-confidence motion was conducted over the weekend, with outcomes revealed on Tuesday.
Society announcements indicated that 1,228 ballots were cast supporting removal, while just over five hundred were opposed the motion.
The announcement confirmed that the president-elect was deemed to have stepped down in accordance with the society's regulations.
Election Controversies
Voting operations were informally suspended early on the previous day after the election official was allegedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from multiple individuals.
In a response, Mr Abaraonye claimed that the count had been halted because electoral officials believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of procedural failures".
His response unequivocally denied that any representative acting for the student had participated in intimidating or disruptive behavior.
Continuing Controversy
The president-elect stated that significant concerns had been submitted to the governing body and that he remained the elected leader.
His comment added that he was "grateful and honored to have the backing of well in excess of a majority of students at Oxford" who supported a "safe election and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".
Critics have said that any failure to remove him would "demonstrate internationally that the society has chosen ideology over integrity".
External Responses
On Friday, Mikey McCoy read out an open letter to the Oxford Union on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.
The letter criticized the union of becoming a institution where "student leaders openly applaud the killing of a ideological rival".
The communication indicated that if the student were to remain in post, supporters would "directly reach out to every American political speaker who has ever spoken at the society and urge them never again to lend their name".
The society had earlier condemned the student's comments after Kirk's death and stated that concerns submitted about him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.
The student leader had been one of several students to debate with the activist at the union in May.
