Oklahoma City Thunder Begin Title Defense with Nail-Biting Double Overtime Win
The Thunder star came to the Thunder in 2019.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored the winning baskets deep into double overtime as the defending champions opened their NBA title defense with a narrow victory over the Houston Rockets.
Last season's MVP poured in 35 points, including two clutch free throws with just 2.3 seconds left in double OT, securing the titleholders a positive start.
The Rockets' big man top-scored with 39 points and also hit a career-high five three-pointers.
But the Thunder's rookie, who added 28 points of his own, played a major role alongside the game's hero.
"Grit and defence," SGA commented of their showing. "We know that when we do it defensively we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—shots, misses, fortune or bad luck. We did enough defence to get the win. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a positive beginning."
Before the tip-off, Oklahoma's title banner was raised at their arena, while the squad were presented with their championship rings.
The Thunder defeated the Indiana Pacers in last season's championship series. It was their first title since the franchise relocated in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had won the 1979 title.
The Pacers will have the chance to secure some payback on Friday when they face Oklahoma, while the Houston return to action on the identical day at the Detroit Pistons.
In other action, a massive performance of 43 points, 12 boards and nine dimes from the Slovenian star was not enough to stop his new team the Lakers from suffering a 119-109 defeat against the Warriors.
Miami's star scored 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter added 23 points for the visiting Warriors.
The Lakers were missing the league's top scorer James as he is recovering from a back issue.
